fishing Report Archive

8/13/02: After a couple of weeks of hot weather in July we finally have a normal year for flows and weather. A welcome change compared to the floods, droughts and fires of the past few years. The upper Yellowstone River is running clear with good flows and water temperatures. Air temperatures have been mostly from the lower-seventies to the mid-eighties. This all translates to the excellent fishing that the Yellowstone river is noted for. Terrestrials with grasshopper patterns should be at the top of your list of flies along with beetle and ant patterns. Attractor patterns like the trudes and Wulff patterns are working. There are still plenty of caddis about so have some elk hair caddis. Nymphs, like the prince nymph, pheasant tail and hares ear patterns are good. Streamer fishing has also been working, bringing fish to the boat when other techniques are being ignored by trout.

7/30/01 Report: The Yellowstone river is running clear with good "hopper" fishing. Forecast is temperatures in the 70's for the next couple of days and 40% to 60 % chance of rain so fish hoppers today...caddis and mayflies tomorrow. If heavy rains occur in Yellowstone Park look for a shot of "mud" later in the week and be prepared to fish around it.

7/22/01 Report: I have reactivated my outfitters license and am open for business.

The Yellowstone River is fishing great. Contrary to what you might have heard, we have had above average rainfall since early June. Our area is green and lush. We're back into our standard summer weather with nice days and evening thunderstorms that keep us in water. Occasionally heavy thunderstorms in Yellowstone Park "muddy" the Lamar River or Soda Butte Creek which in turn cause a "shot" of unclear water to pass through the Yellowstone valley but right now all systems are go.
